Base of Thumb Arthritis Katy

Published on October 7, 2019

Pain at the base of the thumb, difficulty writing and opening things…these are common signs of a specific type of arthritis known as Basilar Joint Arthritis or “Base of Thumb” arthritis. This form of arthritis primarily affects the joint that stabilizes the base of the thumb and as the joint surface deteriorates the pain, stiffness and disability progresses.

There is no cure for arthritis, but there are absolutely treatment options available to alleviate the symptoms. Typically the first step includes some conservative approaches such as supportive splints, anti-inflammatory medications, and modifying activities. The next step is a steroid injection of the affected joint. If you are interested in learning more about your options, our hand specialist can help walk you through the different treatment plan options.
